Spikeball: Join the Movement

IMG_0377

I like to consider it as a combo of volleyball and four-square on steroids.  A backyard hobby to some, a sport to others.  The craze of Spikeball is sweeping the nation (and apparently the world – see International Spikeball Day).  So for those of you who are reading this and haven’t heard of this bundle of awesomeness that can be played literally anywhere (beach, grass, pavement, unfinished basement, etc.), I’m sure the question in your mind can only be, “How do you play?”

The concept of the game is rather simple.  Two v. Two.  Up to three hits per team before possession changes.  In volleyball, the goal is to hit the ball OVER the net; for Spikeball, that is equivalent to hitting the ball INTO the net to change possession.  There are no boundaries, no sides, and movement is essential to success.  Rally scoring, win by two.  First team to 21 points wins the game.  All you need is a Spikeball set, Spikeball ball, and space to play.  If you are interested in a more formal explanation of the rules, you can find that here.

In addition to educating the masses on this addicting game, another purpose of this blog post is to promote Minnesota’s first-ever Spikeball Tournament!  It takes place this Saturday, July 11 in Arden Hills, MN (which just so happens to coincide with International Spikeball Day).  My best friend has organized the event, and a portion of the proceeds will go toward a great cause: Special Olympics Minnesota.  There is still time to sign up, day-of registration is acceptable (9:30am), and the competition begins at 10am!  Come on out to Perry Park to give this game a go!  You must sign up HERE to join, and all skill levels and ages are welcome.  Entry fee is only 20 bucks per team!

While it would be fabulous to be this good someday, I simply enjoy the game for its competitive intricacies and the great workout you get playing it.  Stay tuned in the future, as I have intentions to bring the sport across the border and host a tourney of my own in Eau Claire in early October!  Until then, join the movement.  You won’t regret it.  I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t enjoy Spikeball.

I contend that scoring only occurs while serving. Read the rules: Rally scoring!
